High school kids are cutting up books to make them look like pumpkins in preparation for Halloween at the public library I came to study at, while earning valuable volunteer hours needed for school. The act stirs up something within me as I watch it. I haven’t seen this done before. I was taught to value and respect books as sources of knowledge. Pumpkins resemble abundance. Does a pumpkin made out of a book resemble abundance of knowledge or just an excess of material resources in this culture? How about kids who worshipped books instead? Who loved getting a new book as a gift, who looked forward to it? I’m sure they are still here. Somewhere else.
